Our top tips for starting adult lessons

Learning to swim as an adult can be daunting but our expert instructors are here to make you feel at ease and help you through the first steps. It's never too late to learn.

Our top tips for starting adult lessons

  • Visit the pool before your first session. Our friendly team will be happy to show you around the centre so that you know where the changing rooms and lockers are and how to get to poolside on the day of the lesson.
  • Pack a dedicating swimming bag. There’s nothing worse than getting to the pool and realising you’ve forgotten something. Appropriate swimwear, shampoo/conditioner, shower gel, deodorant, hairbrush and a padlock or £1 coin for your locker are the essentials. Nervous about going on to poolside? Did you know that you can wear towels, robes, glasses, pool footwear (flip flops/sliders) on to poolside? Your instructor will show you where to leave them.
  • Goggles – this is personal choice but you may feel happier putting your face in the water with Goggles on. Try them on at home first and adjust the straps so you are ready to go.
  • Be honest. If you are overcoming a fear or have concerns talk to your instructor. They have a wealth of experience, tips and tricks to help you throughout your learn to swim journey.
  • You’re not alone – everyone in our group lessons is in the same boat, learning as an adult. Talk to the other participants, share stories and have some fun along the way.
  • Use your waterproof fitness tracker or one of our SWIMTAG bands. Tracking your swim enhances motivation and allows you to see how much progress you are making.
