About the Development
What is planned at Putney Leisure Centre?
Wandsworth Council and Places Leisure are making a significant investment in the centre. The programme includes a fully refurbished fitness suite, new and upgraded studio spaces including a dedicated Reformer Pilates studio, a new health and wellbeing suite, refurbished changing facilities, reception and cafe, and significant improvements to the pool provision.
Why are these works happening?
The investment is designed to significantly improve the facility for members and the wider Putney community, with better fitness facilities, more studio space, improved changing rooms, and a stronger swimming offer. The works reflect feedback we have received from members over time and our commitment to delivering a modern, high-quality leisure centre.
What is the current status of the programme?
We are currently in discussions with Wandsworth Council to finalise the programme timeline. As soon as this has been confirmed, we will share an update with our members.
We appreciate your patience and understanding, and we are committed to communicating any developments as quickly as possible.
Will the works happen in phases?
Yes, the work will take place in phases across the centre. We will provide clear updates on each phase, including which areas are affected, what changes to expect, and how we are managing any disruption.
The centre will remain open throughout the programme, and we will take all reasonable steps to minimise any inconvenience to our members.
Swimming
Is the pool still closing?
Following feedback from members and stakeholders, we have agreed with Wandsworth Council to pause the planned pool closure while both parties undertake further engagement.
As a result, the pool closure previously scheduled for 1st July will no longer be going ahead, and all swimming activities will continue as normal until further notice.
We are working closely with the Council to review the proposals, gather additional feedback, and establish a revised timeline. We will share further details on how you can get involved and continue to provide regular updates as the programme progresses.
What is the proposal for the swimming pool?
As part of the longer-term development proposals, the pool space at Putney Leisure Centre is being carefully reviewed to explore how it can be enhanced to provide a better experience and improved use for all members.
Any future proposals will be guided by a clear set of principles, including:
-
No reduction in lane swimming sessions
-
Increased opportunities for community use
-
Expanded provision for swimming lessons
-
Greater access for children, adults, and residents with health conditions, as well as other key community groups
Swimming will continue as normal, and no changes to the pool will take place this year.
Any future decisions will be made following a full programme of engagement with members, customers, and the wider community.
Membership
Can I freeze my membership during the works?
Yes. If the works affect your ability to use the centre in the way you normally would, you can request to freeze your membership for the duration of the relevant closure. You will not be charged a fee to freeze. Please speak to a member of the team in centre or contact us at enquiriesputney@pfpleisure.org or call 0208 785 0388.
Will my direct debit still be taken during closure?
If you choose to freeze your membership during a closure, this will be done free of charge and your direct debit will be paused for the agreed period.
If you decide to continue your membership and use alternative sites during the closure, your direct debit will continue as normal.
If you have any questions about your specific membership or would like to discuss your options, please speak to a member of the team.
Can I use other Places Leisure sites with my Putney membership?
Please speak to the team in centre or contact us to discuss your membership options during the work. We want to make sure you can continue to be active and will do our best to support you throughout the programme.
I am enrolled in swimming lesson. What happens to my lessons?
If you are currently enrolled in a swimming lesson programme, your membership will be automatically frozen for the duration of any pool closure; no action is required from you.
We will contact all swimming lesson participants in advance of any closure to confirm the arrangements and keep you updated when lessons will resume.
During the Works
Will the centre stay open during the works?
Yes. The centre will remain open throughout the programme. While some areas may be temporarily unavailable as work progresses, we will always provide clear communication in advance, including which facilities are affected and for how long.
We are committed to minimising disruption and keeping you informed every step of the way.
How will I know what is changing and when?
We will keep you informed throughout the programme in several ways. Development boards will be displayed at Reception, outlining what is planned and when. You can also scan the QR code on these boards to share your feedback.
We will provide email updates to members at key stages of the programme. In addition, notice boards around the centre will be kept up to date, clearly showing which areas or facilities are temporarily closed and when they are expected to reopen.
Our aim is to ensure you always have clear, timely information about any changes that may affect your visit.
Parking
Car parking will be available as usual. If there are any short-term restrictions or closures this will be advertised in centre in advance.
How can I give feedback or ask a question regarding the work taking place?
We welcome your feedback throughout the programme and encourage you to share your thoughts or ask any questions. You can do this by:
-
Scanning the QR code on the development board in the centre
-
Speaking to any member of our team when you visit
-
Emailing us at enquiriesputney@pfpleisure.org
Your feedback is important to us and will help shape the development as it progresses.
Changing Facilities
What is happening to the changing facilities?
The changing facilities are being completely redesigned as part of the redevelopment. The new Changing Village will be significantly larger and better equipped, with a much-improved offer for families, accessible users and all members.
Will the new Health Suite have its own changing facilities?
Yes. The new state-of-the-art Health Suite will have its own premium changing facilities located directly alongside it to provide a high-quality and seamless experience for users.
Please note that the Health Suite will not provide direct access to the poolside area.
I am a gym user. Where will I be able to change during the works?
As the works progress, changing arrangements may be adjusted. We will keep you fully informed through updates in the centre, including notice boards, so you know what facilities are available and where to find them.
We are committed to giving you as much advance notice as possible of any changes and will ensure suitable changing provision remains available throughout the programme.
What is a Changing Places facility?
A Changing Places facility is a fully equipped changing room designed for people with complex disabilities. The redeveloped centre will include one as part of the new changing provision, which will make the centre accessible to a wider range of disabled visitors and their families.

What will the centre look like when the work is complete?
