Rajeshree's story

Because of safe spaces, my Community is healthier and connected

When the world opened back up after COVID-19, many of us were searching for ways to reconnect – not just with physical activity, but with each other.

This search inspired Rajeshree, a Places Leisure Customer at Waendel Leisure Centre in Wellingborough, and her sister-in-law to create ladies-only swimming sessions at the centre.

Driven by Rajeshree’s personal experiences, she dreamed of creating a safe, welcoming place where women could connect with one another, try something new, and gain confidence.

“When I moved here from India, I didn’t know anyone apart from my family. I didn’t speak English either, which made me feel very uncomfortable. I believe that having that personal experience really helps me understand others better.”

Cultural barriers were a motivating factor too. “In our culture, many women don’t usually go out much orto take part in group activities. My sister-in-law and I both used to attend another ladies-only session at the centre, and we saw how comfortable and confident everyone felt there.” Rajeshree said.

What started as an idea with a few swimming instructors on board, quickly grew into something extraordinary. Beyond the swimming sessions, Rajeshree has poured her energy into making more opportunities for women to come together. She has organised ladies-only netball and cricket sessions, along with health walks and Community dinners.

Her commitment doesn’t stop there; by teaming up with local health networks, she’s making sure that every woman who needs support outside of the sessions can find it. Whether the women need advice about healthy living, mental wellbeing, or other Community activities, it means the benefits continue even after they leave the class.

Seeing how successful the ladies-only sessions have become was a proud and emotional moment for Rajeshree and her sister-in-law.

“When the sessions first started, we didn’t know how many People would join in, so seeing the sessions fill up with women smiling, talking, and enjoying themselves felt incredible.” Rajeshree said.

It showed that there had always been a need for something like this - we just had to create the space.

We all know that physical activity is great for our physical and mental health, but bringing Communities together in a positive way shows just how beneficial it is for social wellbeing too.

“Exercising alongside others builds trust and connection. Physical activity helps women realise their strength, both inside and out, and that confidence can translate into every part of their lives.” Rajeshree said.

Community lies at the heart of everything too. Wellingborough, the town in Northamptonshire where the sessions are based, has a diverse population with some areas of deprivation. Many families and People in the Community have moved to Wellingborough not knowing anyone or having a strong support network, so Rajeshree wants the sessions to be a place that makes everyone feel welcome and supported.

The positive change that the sessions have created is something that Rajeshree also feels deeply connected to. She described how some women who were once very quiet in the sessions now come in full of energy and even mentor newcomers.

“Many women have told us their confidence has improved, they feel healthier, and they’ve even made new friends. It’s beautiful to see how far they’ve come.” Rajeshree said.

One participant, who had previously felt anxious around water, told Rajeshree how taking part in the sessions gave her a sense of happiness and freedom that she hadn’t felt in years. The sessions have proved how there’s much more to exercise than it seems; physical activity helps People reconnect with themselves and each other.

As a result of Rajeshree’s fantastic Community work and the joy she’s brought, she was recently awarded a Because Community Matters award from PfP!

Rachel, a Swimming Teacher at Waendel Leisure Centre who nominated Rajeshree, said: “It’s been a pleasure to work with these ladies over the years. I've witnessed the change in their confidence, not only in the water, but in life.”

“Since the ladies-only lessons started at the centre, we've got to know them and their families. It’s been a joy. We've provided a safe space for their group to grow and hopefully a venue that the whole Community will continue to enjoy.”

“Rajeshree has done a wonderful job bringing People together, making sure their needs are met, they feel welcome, and they belong. It's been amazing working with her.” Rachel added.

The award was a moving surprise for Rajeshree, who never expected the sessions to be recognised in such a meaningful way.

“We just wanted to help women in our Community. Receiving that award reminded us that small ideas can make a big difference, and that kindness and inclusion truly matter.” She said.

So, what’s next for the ladies-only sessions?

Rajeshree would love to develop new activities and see more women coming along! Some ideas she has on her list are family days, health workshops, and activities that bring different generations together.

“My dream is to keep building confidence and connection across the whole Community. The best way to help is to spread the word, come along, or bring a friend. The smallest actions can make a huge difference and together we can keep growing this beautiful Community.” Rajeshree said.

Thanks to the work of Rajeshree and her sister-in-law, women in the local Community who were previously isolated or hesitant to socialise now enjoy friendship, support and confidence. Its created a wider cultural shift too; some of the womens families have been inspired to become more active and boost their social wellbeing.

We’re so proud to have Customers, such as Rajeshree, whose passion goes beyond the pool. Her tireless work has truly strengthened the fabric of Wellingborough’s Community and we’re lucky to stand alongside her in building healthier, happier lives for everyone who visits our centres.
