Sadie and Lily

Read their story below

For six years, Sadie and Lily have hit the court running and used netball as a way to get active together.

Lily started playing netball at school and soon developed a natural talent for the sport, while Sadie had already been involved in three netball leagues across Kent. Once Lily turned 14, it meant she could start playing in the adult league of netball, so she joined one of the teams that Sadie plays for.

“It’s a big step up from school netball and for young people joining adult leagues it may feel quite intimidating, so it was really nice that she was able to join a team I was part of.” Sadie says.

They usually get together for a game once a week, but in the summer when Lily is back from university, they can play up to three matches per week. The whole league is volunteer run and around 8 teams play, which can mean up to 80 women get involved plus umpires and coaches.

It’s such a precious time for them both. What’s really special is that even if Sadie can’t be at a game, the whole netball squad steps into the role of ‘mum’ for Lily. There’s strength in numbers!

For many mums, including Sadie, adding their children to the mix when it comes to physical activity can make staying active more fun. Playing alongside experienced teammates can also be a great learning experience for younger players.

“Lily is an amazing athlete and playing in adult leagues advanced her skill and tactical knowledge of the game really quickly. I would encourage young players to join mixed age teams, there is a lot to learn from well-established players.” Sadie says.
