Read their story below
3 years’ ago, mother-daughter duo, Rachel and Rosie Ratchford started stepping up their activity levels at Wath upon Dearne Leisure Centre. It all began when Rosie started swimming as part of our ‘This Girl Can Swim’ initiative – a selection of swimming sessions which offered women and girls a more comfortable swimming experience. As Rosie enjoyed these, Rachel decided to join too and their mother-daughter activities at Wath developed from there!
After starting with swimming, the duo began expanding their routine attending various classes and then heading into the gym. Fast-forward to now, and you can expect to see Rachel and Rosie in the centre around 5 times a week.
‘We joined and discovered we loved swimming and keeping fit, we now attend the Centre 5 times per week and have been involved in swimming, classes and now the gym all of which we really enjoy!’
It wasn’t just the physical side of starting their fitness journey that made them want to continue, but also the benefits on their mental health and mood that comes along with keeping active. Rachel adds ‘attending the gym daily really has a positive effect on our day, it really stimulates the mind and creates a real positive outlook’

During the course of their active time together, Rachel and Rosie have gained more than just quality mother-daughter time, from attending the centre – they have become friendly with lots of other attendees to their various activities.
‘We have made so many new friends over the last few years, we love to catch up with them when we visit the Centre, joining Wath upon Dearne Leisure Centre has made a massive impact on our lives’
