Health & Wellbeing Success At Guildford Grange
Exercising with friends makes all the difference to resident’s health and wellbeing
Swapping afternoon nap time to exercising with friends makes all the difference to resident’s health and wellbeing …
Residents from Guildford Grange, a purpose built 'Extra Care' Supported Places Housing Scheme for over-55s who require support and access to care to help them live independently swapped their normal afternoon routine for a Gentle Fit Weekly Activity programme delivered by the leadership team from Places Leisure Sheffield.
The team delivered a 4-week programme, where weekly activities varied from seated sports, gentle exercises programmes and relaxed mindfulness. Resident’s particular enjoyed the friendly competition between them when completing the sporting activities, which enabled residents to swap their normal afternoon naps to take part in seated games where the team ran mini tournaments between the groups.
Weekly sessions were well attended by a variety of the over 55’s residents, with an inspiring 99 year old who attended every week and thoroughly enjoyed it. The feedback after the 4-week programme was very positive. Resident’s feedback included:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed myself these last 4 weeks, it was lovely of the team to come and get us moving a little bit more. After the sessions I feel a lot more energetic and happier, its great to get everyone together as well. Thank you to Rochelle and Jo especially for organising and delivering the programme for us”.
“It was great to have the session to look forward to each week and a highlight to our activities, it lifted my mood and energy levels”
“Loved the variety of activities and the fun competition created between the groups, also great to see the older residents getting active and socialising with the group”
“Bringing everyone together and doing a little bit of exercise with friends made this session something to look forward to each week and has inspired me to get active”
To support resident to Move More and continue to be active Places Leisure Contracts Health and Wellbeing Manager, Rochelle Scott supported residents with home exercise DVD programmes where resident can use the communal area to play the DVD and be active together. The groups feedback highlights that they needed that little bit of motivation with getting them to be physically active and this short project definitely inspired and encouraged them to build activity into their daily life’s.
Rochelle added, “We had a fantastic response to the programme from residents who all positively engaged in the weekly sessions, seeing the residents on a weekly basis smile and get involved in activity was brilliant and we thoroughly enjoyed delivering the programme. We look forward to getting involved in further activities with the Places Housing team and helping others to be more active.”
This programme is one of many offered by the Places Leisure Health and Wellbeing team, who support a range of health focussed physical activity programmes for those who are living with a range of health conditions, it is found that a small increase in light and moderate activity can make all the difference to individuals physical and mental wellbeing.
