6 out of 6 for Alycia’s lifeguard course!
Half term saw our Swimming Teacher and Lifeguard Trainer Assessor, take six candidates through their RLSS NPLQ
The course ran from 08:00-5:00pm Monday to Friday with a 7am assessment on the Saturday morning! The course was split into two with lots of classroom time for practice on CPR and first aid, alongside watching training videos and completing coursework. Time in the swimming pool was crucial, to put into practice lots of elements learnt in the classroom. The candidates learnt how to turn over a casualty in the water, tow someone to safety, how work as a team to lift someone from the water and how to rescue someone using the spine board. We will be running further lifeguard courses throughout the year so keep an eye out! Amber, Emily, Lorea, Emma, Toby and Jared successfully passed the course, congratulations! This course was Alycia’s first as a Trainer Assessor so a big congratulations to her on her 100% pass rate!
Emily, Lorea and Emma have come up through our Rookie Lifeguard programme after attending for the last few years. During Rookie, they get to learn and practice lots of water rescues, safe entries, lifting casualties, CPR, aftercare and lots more. This has certainly provided them with lots of tools and knowledge to aid them in their official lifeguard course. Jared is a lifeguard with us but had to retake the course due to him not completing enough training hours within two years of his qualification. Lifeguards have to complete 20 hours of lifeguard training within two years to be able to re-sit the exam. They complete two hours of training per month to keep up to date with their skills and technique. Also this allows them to be informed of any new updates. Amber, Emma and Emily are all long standing members of Hinckley Swim Club and are regulars in the pool for training and competitions. Toby swims for Rugby Swim Club and hopes to work as a lifeguard.

What is Rookie Lifeguard?
The Rookie Lifeguard programme is delivers lessons in valuable survival, rescue and sports skills…all delivered in an exciting way that will get children involved and motivated. The course can run parallel to your child’s current swimming lessons and will enhance the skills they learn in the pool.
Rookie Lifeguard is aimed at children – though the skills learned through the course of the programme are just as valuable to people of all ages. The scheme begins with Stage 1 of the Bronze Award and progresses to Stage 3 of the Gold Award, starting off at an ability level suitable for brand-new swimmers and progressing to the level where our Rookie Lifeguards perform impressive lifesaving tows.
For anyone wishing to attend the Rookie Lifeguard programme they will be expected to be able to swim 25m, exit the pool unaided (i.e. without assistance or using the steps) and tread water for 30 seconds whilst wearing shorts and t-shirts in addition to swimwear. Further to this we run the Survive & Save Programme award as the next level from the Rookie Lifeguard series. The awards are challenging but fun to complete and are arranged into Bronze, Silver and Gold levels to ensure that participants get the opportunity to develop their lifesaving skills as they progress through the awards.
There are four award areas to experience, the Medallion Awards, the Beach Awards, the Stillwater. For anyone wishing to attend the Survive and Save programme they will be expected to be able to swim 50m, tread water for 2 minutes, exit the pool unaided whilst wearing a long sleeved top and long trousers.
