Christie Miller Sports Centre to close on 19 October 2018

End of an era for customers and colleagues

Christie Miller Sports Centre will close its doors to customers on 19 October 2018, following a recent inspection by Wiltshire Council.

Wiltshire Council who own the building - confirmed that significant investment of up to £1m would be needed to keep the building open and operating safely for customers and colleagues.

The closure of the centre has been on the cards since the Council made the decision to replace the facilities with a new campus in Melksham. It was hoped that Christie Miller Sports Centre would remain operational until the new campus opens in 2021, but sadly, this option is no longer viable.

Wiltshire Council Cabinet Member for campuses – John Thomson said:

“The cost to maintain the centre and the risks associated to ensure it’s fit for purpose for public use has led us to the difficult decision to close the centre prior to a new one being available. The cost to continue with this centre is prohibitive and investment would have a detrimental impact on the new centre and its facilities, as the cost would have to be met from the budget allocated for the new campus.”

Keith Love-Evans – Places Leisure Area Manager said:

“Although the centre clearly needs investment, it’s an important part of the local health and wellbeing landscape and it will be missed by many members who use it regularly for classes, workouts and other sports.

Places Leisure is totally committed to ensuring our customers continue to have the opportunity to exercise and workout locally and remind customers that their premium membership entitles them to use facilities across all Places Leisure sites within Wiltshire, along with sites operated by the Council.”

For many customers their nearest centre is now likely to be Melksham Blue Pool, but customers may also want to consider using the facilities at the following centres:

* The Olympiad Leisure Centre, Chippenham

* Castle Place Leisure Centre, Trowbridge

* Trowbridge Sports Centre

* Bradford on Avon Swimming Pool

* Leighton Recreation Centre, Westbury

* Westbury Swimming Pool

* Warminster Sports Centre

* The Activity Zone, Malmesbury

* Lime Kiln Leisure Centre, Royal Wootton Bassett.

We’ll be communicating directly with customers and colleagues regarding the closure – if in the meantime you have any questions about your membership or how to access alternative facilities please send an email to

Questions regarding the new campus should be directed to Wiltshire Council.
